Slashdot | Sneak Preview of VIA's next-gen mini-ITX mobo
Slashdot | Sneak Preview of VIA's next-gen mini-ITX mobo: "VIA will preview its next-generation mini-ITX board for the consumer electronics market at next week's Computex 2004 in Taipei. The EPIA SP features a new graphics and memory controller hub (GMCH) supporting faster front-side bus (FSB), memory, and southbridge interconnect speeds. It also features a C3 processor clocked at 1.3GHz, integrated PadLock Hardware Security Suite, and MPEG-4 acceleration. Oh, and like the current top-end MII 12000 VIA board, the whole board probably draws under 20watts running flat out.' "

ABSTRACT: What the heck is a PVR and why you'd want to build one.
AUTHOR: Rampy (reviews AT byopvr.com)
What's A PVR?
A PVR is an acronym for Personal Video Recorder... sometimes it is referred to as a Digital Video Recorder (DVR). A PVR is like a very smart digital VCR on steroids.
Why would anyone want anything more than a VCR? Let me use myself as a usecase. I have a Tivo. The basic functionality of a PVR allows you to schedule recordings by program instead of just time/date/channel a traditional VCR offers. I can interact with the program guide to find details about upcoming shows so I can record only the 'Seinfeld' episode where George tries to preserve his high score on a Frogger machine and NOT the Keith Hernandez episodes. I can make wishlists 'queries' that tell my Tivo to record any shows/movies that a have a specific actor. The next time 'Treasure of Sierra Madre' is shown it's going to be taped, even if it's 4 months from now at 3:45am on TCM. I can record only the NEW episodes of 'CSI' or 'Friends' and never see a re-run (unless I want to). "

Okay, I've just about had enough of these fershlugginer news sites like latimes.com, washingtonpost.com, and chicagotribune.com requiring registration to view stories, and THEN force-feeding you intrusive shtml "commercials" -- often with unmutable sound -- to boot. Whenever possible, I will be using google news to find alternative news links. In the meantime, go to bugmenot.com to get generic usernames/passwords for compulsory registration sites.

Slashdot | Camera Vans To Photograph 50 Million Buildings: " 'A new van unveiled at CeBIT America is equipped with 50 digital cameras and takes pictures every 15 feet -- with the goal of photographing 50 million buildings in the country. These photos could be cross-referenced with aerial photographs so that law enforcement or insurance agencies can get overhead and street level views of the same location -- just by entering an address.' Study: DVRs 'Recapture' 96% Of TV Ad Zapping
By Joe Mandese
Tuesday, May 25, 2004
Digital video recorders (DVR) typically are seen as the ultimate threat to TV advertising, giving consumers unsurpassed control over what they choose to watch or not watch on their TV sets, including TV commercials. And while it is true that most DVR subscribers do fast-forward through TV commercials when watching programming in replay mode, new research indicates that the net effect of DVRs actually increases the likelihood that viewers will see a TV commercial not decrease it. TiVo killed the rerun | PVRblog
TiVo killed the rerun | PVRblog: "Great news from the LA Times regarding sweeping changes in the way networks are phasing out reruns. TV execs have often claimed that TiVo had the potential to drastically alter their universe (which is automatically seen as a bad thing) and this looks like the first real change, aside from increased product placements to combat fast-fowarding through ads. Apparently, a sizable number of PVR owners are impacting their bottom line as their recorders automatically pass over old episodes. Aside from TiVos, they're also finding big drops in audience numbers during the summer rerun season, as viewers either flock to cable shows or the internet or just turn it off. "

How long has Jack McKeon been managing? He's been managing since Eisenhower was president. A first-term president (in 1955, he managed the Fayetteville Highlanders to a third-place finish in the Carolina League). McKeon managed in the minors for 16 seasons before he finally got a shot to manage in the majors, with the Kansas City Royals in 1973.

AGONIZER
AGONIZER
There’s just no explaining it. It’s not a damn fuzzbox, it’s not a tube-amp simulator, and it’s not the slightest bit like anything else you’ve ever seen / heard. Think of the TX-1 Agonizer as a magical 1965-era industrial-music sonic reducer. It screws everything down to a nice, crunchy sonic pureè with aluminum shavings and broken glass mixed in. Yum. Please understand, it’s not a nice, sweet, well-behaved pussy-pussy “vintage tone” effect. You simply can’t get a simulation of a Fender Super Reverb out of this horrible yellow box. Trust us. If you're another one of those little obedient, cowardly, sniveling "tone lovers", the TX-1 is not for you to snivel over, so don't buy one. And if you worship METALLICA, perhaps you should buy some nice pink fairy wings instead of a TX-1.

mamboserver.com now running 4.6
Monday, 03 May 2004
This site is now running a pre-beta version of MOS 4.6. The site has not yet been updated to take advantage of some of the new features. The reason for the update is to make sure the core is still stable.
The update to 4.6 is very simple: two new configuration.php parameters and a small SQL update.
There is a bug at the moment with the MOS World News component here on mamboserver.com and this is due to the move from the fase4 RSS/RDF libraries to DOMIT. We hope to have the fixed in the next few days.

Thomas Irvin sounds off on Similar Sounding Songs.
The Rain Song by Led Zeppelin vs. Being Simple by the Judybats
There’s a story that goes with this. A friend of mine asked me what I thought of the Judybats. One of the things I told her was that I thought their song Being Simple sounded a lot like The Rain Song by Led Zeppelin. Turns out she’s friends with a guy from the band, who sends me an email stating in no uncertain terms that the Judybats would NEVER steal something from Led Zeppelin, and furthermore, he didn’t know the Zeppelin song in question. Well, that’s just fine. I never said they ripped off Zeppelin, I just said the two sound similar. Hear for yourself.
