Tue Jun 15th, 2004 at 09:28:36 AM EST

Three years ago, I was working at a small company as the unofficial IT director / all-purpose computer bitch. I was laid off in early 2003, but to this day, the job presents me with difficulties; namely, that of telling prospective employers what I did, and for that matter, what the company itself did. I have virtually no idea what this company's function was, despite working there for over a year and a half, although I did learn how to spew an amazing amount of marketing jargon without thinking. As for my role there, it was essentially vast tracts of doing absolutely nothing, punctuated erratically by moments of panicking and crisis-defusion, usually involving something truly earth-shattering like the CEO not being able to print her email. When asked by interviewers 'What did your company do?' I am forced to mumble vaguaries about consulting and hope they leave the issue alone."

Sony will update its PSX personal video recorder/Playstation 2 combo device family on 1 July following the company's move to suspend production of the original models earlier this year.
The new models, the DESR-5100 and DESR-7100, offer the same storage capacity - 160GB and 250GB, respectively - as their predecessors, the DESR-5000 and DESR- 7000. What's changed is the introduction of a better graphical user interface and the ability to add DVD-style menus to content copied from the unit's hard drive to a DVD-R, DVD-RW or DVD+RW disc."

As many of you may know DirecTV has been suing people who purchased card programers even if they had legitimate reasons for them. Many have settled to avoid legal issues. The problem was they had to prove innocence instead of DirecTV proving guilt. The only thing that DirecTV did was say they purchased the card programmer from a site that sold Satellite pirating equipment. Even though there are legitimate uses. Thanks to the EFF for stopping this horrible miscarriage of the legal system. '

Just as eBay connects each seller to a universe of potential buyers, AdSense connects each blogger and local Webmaster to 150,000 potential advertisers. The crucial point is that the blogger reaches those potential advertisers without having to hire a sales staff, prepare media kits or invest scarce time and money.

The operators of PVRBlog, which covers TiVo and related devices, have told a similar story. Even blogs dealing with political and social themes have received modest new revenue streams.

Reuters catches up with the homebrew PVR revolution with today's article 'Step aside TiVo, here comes Freevo.' It's a new overview of the home PC-based options, including Freevo, MythTV, Snapstream's BeyondTV, and Microsoft's Media Center. It also mentions the the Build Your Own PVR website.
Personally, although I've heard good things about MythTV and Freevo, unless you're fairly familiar with building your own PCs from scratch and running command-line tools, Snapstream's BeyondTV is the easiest way to dip your toe into the homebrew PVR pool. Microsoft's version is a non-option, as it can only be legally obtained when buying a new home theater PC, which typically runs $1200-1600."

Expect to see some big names on the NFL free-agent market. A good pass rusher, Pittsburgh's Jason Gildon, who has had 60 sacks the last six years, will be available to the highest bidder. A plugging middle linebacker, Jeremiah Trotter, who probably has a solid year left in him, will also be up for grabs. But quarterback Rich Gannon, who most of us thought we'd see on the street this week, won't be."

Build Your Own Personal Video Recorder 101: (Part2)

ABSTRACT: I want to build a PVR, uh how do I go about doing that again?
Author: rampy AT randomdrivel.com
Link to Part 1 of the article

I want to build my own PVR what do I need?
A little bit of money, some patience, a little PC building knowledge, and a dream!

A brief word about costs: Your costs are directly tied to how fancy you want to make your PVR and what functionality you *have* to have. Your homebrew PVR expectations could be very low/simple like: 'I want to grab some of my favorite shows and either watch them on my PC monitor or burn them on to DVD or SVCD for prosperity'. In such a scenario you can simply buy a tuner/capture (ranging from $50 - $200) and you can use your existing PC as your PVR. Baddaboom Baddabing, done... but if you have higher expectations for your project such as having a small form factor PC and a sexy case that fits right in with your other entertainment center electronic devices, you are going to pay a slight premium and ratchet the costs up. The main point here is that your PVR costs correlate to your desired functionality and vanity. "

Ubercade - MAME Arcade Cabinet Conversion : HOME: "Welcome to Ubercade!
Shall we play a game? Ubercade (uber + arcade) was created to whet my insatiable appetite for classic (and not so classic gaming), and my need to have a 400 lb hulk of particle board and wires in my basement.
Thanks to the miracle that is emulation software I could relive my mispent youth without having to beg my Dad for more quarters. All was not well in video gaming paradise, however... Banging on a keyboard at my desk or futzing with a cheezy game pad wasn't quite the same experience. I wanted more. I wanted to Build My Own Arcade Controls so that I could experience the classics in the manner they were meant to be experienced: in a full fledged 'authentic' arcade cabinet.
Through these principles a guiding cathode ray light was shone and UBERCADE was born! er... hatched! ... uhm... created?!
From this site you can see marvelous pictures and bask in the retrogaming glory that is Ubercade, read the diary of a madman to better understand the construction process, envy at my cold soldering hacking tecnique, point out the minute detail that I overlooked, or comment on how you would have done it better. Slashdot | NTT DoCoMo's 4G Tests Hit 300Mbps: "'Your brand-spankin'-new 3G phone is nearing obsolesence: NTT DoCoMo reveals the results from a new 4G test system.' says TheFeature. While in a car moving at 30kph, DoCoMo engineers managed a peak throughput of 300Mbps and a sustained transfer rate of 135Mbps with their new variable spreading factor orthogonal frequency code division multiplexing (WSF-OFCDM) downstream technology. Who comes up with these names, and how does Japan manage to stay lightyears ahead of everyone else in wireless"

About the WinTV-Nexus-s, FTA, and DVB

Note: This article was written to answer a person's question about what the WinTV-Nexus-s is.
The specsheet on the card is available from Hauppauge. The technology is being refered to, goes by such names as Free-To-Air (FTA) and Direct Video Broadcasting (DVB). The two terms are actually completely different, but are used on many websites and eBay to mean the same thing.

History
Basically, Back 15 to 20 years ago people used really large satellite dishes that were usually 8 to 12 feet in diameter. These are refered as C band. Later another satellite technology appeared that's refered to as Ku band. The difference between the two is that C band operates typically from about 3.4 to 4.8 GHz and using relatively low power. Ku band on the other hand operates typically from about 10.7 to 12.75 GHz and using relatively high power. A good page on frequencies and such is at the MLESAT Web Site."
